The shadow puppet show is also known as a light show .It uses an old style of traditional folk opera,which is very popular in the central shanxi plain.This type of performance come into being before the Han Dynasty and went into a period of great prosperity during the Tang Dynasty.
There were also shadow plays during the Song ,Yuan,Ming and Qing Dynasties.At the end of Qian Dynasty there were two types of performance. The figures are made of fine and selected high quality donkey or cow hide which must first be soaked in water. This makes the hide smooth and transparent so they can be shaped and colored.After being thoroughly dried out every image is carved as the profile and covered with tunk oil. The limbs and head of each figure are moveable and controlled by thin bars. A piece of white gauze about the size to a minifilm is used as the screen. The performers would stand under the screen and keep the image close to the screen. Light comes form behind the performers.
