Iodine is a purple or black nonmetallic element with an orthogonal crystal structure. The toxic element is easily sublimated and easily purified in this manner. Insoluble in water, but soluble in ethanol, ether, carbon tetrachloride and other common solvents. Iodine is used as a fungicide and antiseptic in dyes, tinctures, and medicines. Application
