Xylazine Hydrochloride is an alpha-2 agonist with sedative, analgesic, and muscle relaxation effects. It is approved for dogs, cats, horses, deer and elk. The drug can cause vomiting in most cats and some dogs. Xylazine is antagonized by Yohimbe. It produces effective analgesic effects on horses and is often used to treat pain associated with colic and to sedate minor surgeries. It is also used in combination with ketamine for short-term field surgery in horses, such as castration and the suturing of large wounds, as this combination usually produces a bed rest of 15 to 20 minutes. Toluenthiazide is common for additional label use in bovine cesarean sections and other surgical procedures.
