Benzocaine, sold under the brand name Orajel amongst others, is an ester local anesthetic commonly used as a topical pain reliever or in cough drops. It is the active ingredient in many over-the-counter anesthetic ointments such as products for oral ulcers.
Benzocaine is used to relieve pain and itching caused by conditions such as sunburn or other minor burns, insect bites or stings, poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, minor cuts, or scratches.
Along with needed effects, Benzocaine topical may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of side effects of Benzocaine may occur, if they do occur, you may need medical attention immediately.
An overdose of numbing medication such as Benzocaine can cause fatal side effects if too much of Benzocaine is absorbed through your skin and into your blood. This can happen if you apply more Benzocaine than the recommended dose. Please use the smallest amount needed.
