Physical and chemical properties: hygroscopic amorphous powder, [α]16d-12.8°(c=416, methanol), tetraacetate is colorless needle crystal, melting point (m.p.) 196℃.

Pharmacological effects: Paeoniflorin inhibits the isolated intestinal tube, in situ gastric motility and uterine smooth muscle, and antagonizes the contraction caused by oxytocin. Paeoniflorin has a significant analgesic effect. The infusion of Paeonia lactiflora antagonizes the convulsions induced by stilbene. Decoction of peony has inhibitory effect on certain pathogenic bacteria and fungi. Paeoniflorin has a hypothermic effect on normal body temperature and inhibits platelet aggregation.

Clinical Applications: Used in the treatment of coronary heart disease; for geriatric diseases, to enhance physical fitness and immune function, anti-inflammatory cough, expectorant and asthma, especially in the treatment of chronic respiratory diseases in the elderly as an auxiliary drug.
