As automotive material, carbon fiber(CF for short) has the largest advantages - light weight, high strength, whose weight is 20% to 30% of steel’s and hardness is 10 times of steel’s. Therefore, CF material has made many breakthroughs in weight reduction of automobiles and also brought social benefit of saving energy. It is considered that CF ‘s application amount in automotive manufacturing fields will be increased.

The Chinese Academy of Science has developed one car with CF on the shell. There possibly would be depression on the lacquer cover after hardly hitting with the hammer on the engine cover of normal material while the shell of this car is quite solid and the surface is intact and the hammer rebounds rapidly after hardly hitting on this car. The researchers said that the largest features of CF composite car are  lighter and faster while compared with normal steel cars. Compared with normal steel cars, CF composite car is 60% less in weight and this car could drive additional 50 kms in the same condition. Although CF is quite light, it is relatively safe. It looks like plastic, but it has better impact strength than steel. The CF steering wheel, bumper has higher mechanical strength and impact strength. CF automobile has become armored car of the household automobiles in conjunction with the composite material. CF material has been applied in the skirt of high-speed trains.
