Further experiments investigated the effect of supplemental lutein esters on the increase of macular pigment density in the retina. These studies have found that after taking lutein esters, there is a significant increase in macular pigment density. This phenomenon occurs in both healthy and early AMD patients. This shows that the diseased macula can also obtain stable lutein from lutein esters, and even patients who have been diagnosed with AMD can benefit from lutein ester supplements. The fact that AMD patients can benefit from lutein supplements is confirmed by lutein antioxidant supplementation trials. This is a 12-month, placebo-controlled intervention trial in elderly AMD male patients. Experiments were supplemented with either lutein or lutein ester mixed with antioxidants. The experimental results showed that the subject's macular pigment density increased by 50%, and the eye function has also been considerably improved.
