Berberine is an isoqinoline alkaloid shown to have a chemopreventive property against colon tumor formation by inhibiting the enzyme Cox-2 which is abundantly expressed in colon cancer cells. Also inhibits c-Jun, a transcription factor that plays a critical role in inflammation and carcinogenesis.

Berberine is a chemical found in several plants. People take berberine for heart failure. Some people apply berberine directly to the skin to treat burns and to the eye to treat trachoma, a bacterial infection that frequently causes blindness.
