Black cardamom, also known as hill cardamom, Bengal cardamom, Greater cardamom, Indian cardamom, Nepal cardamom, Winged cardamom and Brown cardamom, comes from either of two species in the family Zingiberaceae. It's seed pods have a strong camphor-like flavour, with a smoky character derived from the method of drying. Large cardamom is the dried fruit of a perennial herbaceous plant and its quality characteristics are different from that of small cardamom. The seeds have sweetish, smokey flavour when bitten. 

Cooking use of Black Cardamom

1. Black Cardamom pods are used as a spice and in several mixed masala range.
2. Black Cardamom is used in rice and savory dal preparations.
3. It is used as a flavoring base in the preparation of tea, coffee, and liquors.
4. Also useful in confectionery and pickles.

Medicinal uses of Black Cardamom

1. Black cardamom seeds prevent heart disease.
2. The seeds also help control cardiac rhythm, which is useful as it maintains blood pressure while also reducing the incidence of blood clots.
3. This spice actively works as an antidote for scorpion and snake venom.
4. The therapeutic properties of cardamom oil have found application in many traditional medicines as antiseptic, antispasmodic, carminative, digestive, diuretic, expectorant, stimulant, stomachic and tonic.
