The appearance of indigo is dark blue granular or powder. It cannot be dissolved in water and common organic solvents, such as ethanol and aether, but it is soluble in hot aniline. Its melting point in the closed environment is 390~392℃, and it begins sublimating slowly at 290℃. It is dark blue when meets concentrated sulfuric acid, and blue after attenuation. Its aqueous solution turns green to yellow-green when added into sodium hydroxide.
