D-230 polyoxypropylenediamine is one of a family of Huntsman LLC polyamines having as their backbones repeating oxypropylene units. As shown by the above idealized structure,  D-230 amine is a difunctional primary amine having an average molecular weight of approximately 230. Its amine groups are located on secondary carbon atoms at the ends of an aliphatic polyether chain. D-230 amine is light in color, low in viscosity and vapor pressure, high in primary amine content, and completely miscible with a wide variety of solvents, including water.

AVAILABILITY

D-230 amine is available in tank cars, tank wagons, 55-gallon drums of 430 pounds net weight, and 5-gallon cans. Samples are available through any Huntsman LLC sales office.

APPLICATIONS

D-230 polyoxypropylenediamine undergoes reactions typical of primary amines. Because of its unique structure, however, D-230 amine has found its most significant use as an epoxy curing agent. The use of  D-230 amine leads to tough, clear, impact-resistant coatings, castings, and adhesives. Examples include coatings for decoupage and furniture, reinforced composites, electrical encapsulation, and lamination. Coatings made with unmodified  D-230 amine are free of the surface “blush” prevalent with many amine-curing agents. D-230 amine has found its way into miniature medical devices, industrial floors, boat construction, decorative clocks, and space vehicles.

Epoxies formulated with D-230 amine can be readily modified because D-230 amine is compatible witha wide range of modifiers and curing agents, including other products.

Amidation of D-230 polyoxypropylenediamine with a variety of aliphatic and aromatic carboxylic acids is readily accomplished by known techniques. The resulting polyamides are of interest as “hot melt” adhesives, for example.

As a primary amine,D-230 diamine reacts quickly with isocyanates. The reaction can be man-aged, however, if small quantities are used (e.g., as a viscosity modifier) or if quick-mix equipment (e.g., RIM) is employed. Salts may be formed readily which have potential use, e.g., as surfactants and fire retardants.
