What is a Ribbon Tweeter?

Most folks are familiar with the mechanics of a standard speaker or tweeter. An electromagnetic coil with a cone attached is placed in the center of a round permanent magnet. When the coil is energized with a positive or negative signal, the coil moves up and down in the magnetic field and produces a sound.
 Ribbon tweeters approach the problem using the same techniques, but in an entirely different manner. There are several patented methods of using a thin sheet, or ribbon, as a tweeter, but we’ll discuss the general principle.
 Instead of a round magnet that pulls or pushes an electromagnetic coil, ribbon tweeters use strong parallel permanent magnets with a very thin sheet of electromagnetic film or metal stretched taught between the two. When the ribbon is energized with a positive or negative signal, it moves toward one or the other permanent magnets, producing a sound. Various implementations include a straight ribbon or several variations of an accordion ribbon to produce the sound.
 Although having existed for many decades, the ribbon tweeter has not achieved mainstream success due to the use of a transformer (which may introduce slew) and high directionality of the audio signal.
