UHMWPE is also called Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene, also known as high-modulus polyethylene (HMPE) or high-performance polyethylene (HPPE), is a subset of the . It has extremely long chains, with numbering in the millions, usually between 2 and 6 million. The longer chain serves to transfer load more effectively to the polymer backbone by strengthening intermolecular interactions. This results in a very tough material, with the highest of any thermoplastic presently made.[] It is highly resistant to corrosive chemicals, with exception of oxidizing acids. It has extremely low moisture absorption, has a very low , is self-lubricating, and is highly resistant to (15 times more resistant to abrasion than ). Its coefficient of friction is significantly lower than that of and , and is comparable to that of , but UHMWPE has better abrasion resistance than Teflon. It is odorless, tasteless, and nontoxic.

Applications:

Because UHMWPE has excellent abrasion resistance it is often used for lining chutes, hoppers and UHMWPE is also used for slideways and wear blocks in aggressive environments. UHMWPE Sheet is often found in food production environments where high volumes of containers need to be guided along conveyors or production lines. Because UHMWPE Sheet has very low moisture absorption, it is also found in some high demand areas of marine applications. UHMWPE is sometimes used in cryogenic components due to its low operating temperature abilities.
