How to choose a yoga bolster

A short article highlighting the most important things to consider when buying a yoga bolster.

I don’t know about you but there are some yoga poses I used to dread because they simply hurt.  Pain in my knees and ankles was the problem, particularly in the kneeling yoga poses.  But you don’t need to put up with the pain.  Just buy a yoga bolster.

Yoga bolsters are for everyone but can be especially helpful for yoga during pregnancy (prenatal yoga) 0r if you suffer from arthritis or joint pain.

There’s a lot of choice so, how do you pick the right one?  Here’s the most important points -

Firstly, there are so many different names for similar things, if you’re not sure whether you need a yoga bolster, or a yoga pillow or a zafu or zabuton or just an extra thick yoga mat check out my article “Do you need a yoga bolster, a yoga pillow, a zafu, a zabuton, a yoga cushion or just some yoga blankets?”

OK, if you’re sure you need a yoga bolster ……..  there are two main types, round yoga bolsters (really cylindrical yoga bolsters) and rectangular yoga bolsters.  They are both similar sizes, about 25 inches long, but rectangular yoga bolsters are thinner and wider.  Rectangular yoga bolsters are about 12 inches wide and provide support for more of your body.  If you lie back on a rectangular yoga bolster it will cover most of your back and give you support all over.  Round yoga bolsters  are narrower at about 9 inches and they do a slightly different job.  Round yoga bolsters support you on the top of the cylinder but allow your body to stretch down the sides.  Think of the difference between lying on a flat pillow and lying on a tube.  There are advantages to each shape for particular poses so either buy one of each or see if you can try them to decide which suits you best.

Pranayama or breathing yoga bolsters are slightly smaller versions of normal yoga bolsters designed to help your back and chest stretch and relax while practising deep breathing.

Yoga bolsters can be heavy, particularly the more traditional styles, so decide whether you are going to be taking your yoga bolster to and from the studio or whether you will be keeping it at home (some people become so fond of their yoga bolsters they use them permanently as furniture).

Weight is important but light yoga bolsters can tend to be too soft.  The whole idea is to provide support so a yoga bolster needs to be firm.  Find the right balance of weight and firmness to suit you.

Style is important.  However much we try to avoid materialism we still don’t want to be embarrassed by our yoga equipment.  As always there is a balance between practicality and environmentalism.  You should probably buy an unbleached organic cotton yoga bolster with an environmentally friendly filling or maybe a hemp yoga bolster with a wheat filling.  But if you want a more hi-tech yoga bolster, maybe something lighter, in bright colors and easy to wash there’s plenty of choice online.

So, think about shape weight and style, do your research and choose the yoga bolster that best suits you and your yoga practice.
