Air Tightness Inspection
Air inflation
Filling Helium to system, pressure is higher than the highest pressure 1MPa of Isothermal Adsorption Experiment. System temperature adjusted to the reservoir temperature. Continuous observation for the system seal condition, if it’s good, to the next experiment.
Free Space Volume Measurement
Temperature
System temperature is adjusted to reservoir temperature
Inflation
Open the cylinder; inflate the gas to system, adjust standard pressure valve, and then close the standard room valve
Data Acquisition
Open the valve of standard room and sample cylinder collect the data after the balance of pressure, do the volume experiment twice, allowable error is ±0.1cm3, calculate the coal volume and get the blank
Isothermal Adsorption Experiment
Experiment Pressure determination
The highest experimental pressure is set up to 1.2 times of reservoir pressure, minimum pressure is 8MPa
Experiment Pressure Spot Distribution
Highest Pressure<8MPa, choose 6 experiment spots; Highest Pressure between 8MPa-12MPa, choose 7 experiment spots; Highest Pressure <12MPa, choose 8 experiment spots
Inflation
Open regulated valve and standard room valve, inflate methane to system, and adjust the standard room pressure to ideal pressure.
Data acquisition
After get the ideal pressure and stable temperature, start the data collection of the isothermal adsorption experiment program
Time of Adsorption Balance Determination
No less than 12 hours at least
Repeating Step 3 -5, until the end of experiment of last pressure spot

The calculation of coal sample volume and free space volume

P3- Initial pressure of sample cylinder, units of measurement (MPa);

T2- Initial temperature of reference cylinder, units of measurement (K);
T3- Initial temperature of sample cylinder units of measurement (K);
V1- System total volume units of measurement (cm3);
V2- Reference cylinder volume units of measurement (cm3);
V3- Sample cylinder volume units of measurement (cm3);
Z1- Gas compression factor under the balance condition, dimensionless
Z2- Initial gas compression factor of reference cylinder, dimensionless
Z3- Initial gas compression factor of sample cylinder, dimensionless
 
After getting the coal sample volume, calculate the free space volume of sample cylinder. Free Space Volume refers to the sum of various volumes that coal particle space after the coal sample put into the sample cylinder, micro-flow gap of internal coal particle size, the remaining free space of sample cylinder, and connection tube and internal space volume. Calculation formulas of free space volume as follows:
Vf- Free space volume, unit of measurement (cm3)
V0- Total volume of sample cylinder, unit of measurement (cm3);
Vs- Coal sample volume, unit of measurement (cm3);
Z3- sample cylinder initial gas compressed factor, dimensionless
Calculation the absorption capacity of each pressure spot
According to balance pressure and temperature of reference cylinder and sample cylinder, calculate adsorption capacity of different pressure spot Formulas as follows

Respectively obtain the gas mole number of inner sample cylinder before pressure spot balance and after balance, the gas mole number of sample cylinder (N2), mole number of coal sample adsorption of gas (ni)
