 All manufacturing processes such as welding ,casting, heat treating, grinding, tumbling  ( in the barrel ), electroplating, quenching,  machining,   and  shot  peening  will create  residual stresses  in  materials.   The  appropriate   negative  residual stresses  in  the  surface of  materials  is  one  of   the  factors which will strengthen  the components  and extend  its  service life. While the unsuitable residual stresses may cause defects and premature failures in materials and components.

X-Ray diffraction   is a conventional and time proven technique for measuring   residual stresses. Including  the interatomic  spacing  as  the  ultimate  gage  length,   X-ray technique  is applicable to measure  the absolute  stress for all crystalline materials  without  the  need  of  unstressed sample  for  calibration.

With experience in researching and manufacturing X-ray Stress Analyzer for more than 20 years and know-how in residual stress analysis, Handan Stress Technologies Co.,Ltd of China is honored to present X-350A X-Ray Stress Analyzer , a patented product in China. For example, invited by Ertan Hydroelectric Station of China, we performed welding residual stress measurement against leaves of francis turbines, a product from GE Hydro company. The results was accepted by GE and subsequently used by GE in engineering quality control programs.

 

In addition to measuring residual stresses, x-ray diffraction can also be used for measuring retained austenite content in steels. Austenite  is  a  phase  of  steel  and    is  critical   to  component   lifetime  and  performance,   especially  in high-tolerance components  such  as  bearings  and  gears. By the use of a particularly designed goniometer, the X-350A X-Ray Diffraction System is convenient to measure retained austenite content in steels especially.
