China is the largest cotton producing country in the world. Among 31 provinces in mainland, 24 provinces produce cotton, and about 300 million people are involved in cotton production. From 1978 to 1984, China’s cotton output increased steadily, and reached a historic high of 6.26 million metric tons in 1984; afterwards the cotton output fluctuated between 4.1-5.7 million metric tons, but dropped to 3.8 million metric tons in 1999.
