Spiral chute is kind of gravity separation machine. It beneficiates according to law of ore motion in slopy water. Ore blocks move along the slot in the water flow. On the effect of both water-dashing fight and friction with the slot bottom, ore blocks layer because of different densities. The heavier ore will deposit at the spiral chute bottom while the lighter material will go along with the water to be the tailings.
coarse ore spiral chute is usually elongated slot made from wood or iron board, and it can be used to separate coarse ore like tungsten, tin, alluvial gold, etc. Generally, the spiral chute for gold is shorter than that for tungsten and tin because density of gold is bigger with its stronger deposit ability.Dam-board is smaller to make stronger eddy to loose the bed midum. The spiral chute on land is usually 15m long, 0.5-0.6m wide and 5-8°inclined with its wide feeding range.     if screening the gravels of 10-20mm out, the operation rate can be about 60%. Tests show gold separated by spiral chute in the first 3 meters aoccupied 95% of all gold recovered by the spiral chute. 
Spiral chute for gold ore separation is 4 meters long, 0.4 meter wide and 0.35 meter high, made from steel board. Every 0.4 meter, there is dam-board made from angle steel with the angle steel arris laid against the current. Fast turbulent flow will be in the slot when the pulp is fed fron the head end. The big density gold concentrate will deposit at the bottomto to form heavy ore layer. The heavy ore will be retained by the dam-board to stay in the slot while the upper ore wil folw away together with the water.
The clean period of the gold spiral chute depends on gold percentage in the raw gold ore and percentage of other heavy material. Big spiral chute on land is usually cleaned every two or three days while for small-scale ship, it has to be cleaned everyday with every cleaning time of 4-6 hours. the heavy sand from the spiral chute can be re-separated by jigger or shaking table.
Treatment capacity of spiral chute is large, but the recovery rate is low. The loss of gold by this spiral chute is a large amount, so spiral chute is commonly used in small-scale shipn and for large scale ship and gold beneficiation factories, jigger is used for the rough separation and fine selection.
