What is Ultrasonic Debridement

UWI Ultrasonic Wound Irrigation System

UWI Ultrasonic Wound Therapy System mixes ultrasonic energy for selective dissection and fragmentation of tissues, coupling with saline irrigation at the wound bed. The ultrasonic waves penetrate down into the dermis at least 1 cm enabling removal of debris, exudates, fragments and other matter firmly embedded under unhealthy granulation through cavitation and streaming of the saline solution.  The action of mechanical debridement reduces the glyco matrix surrounding the biofilm and also damages the cell wall of organisms.

The UWI Ultrasonic Wound Irrigation System provides:

·         selective, precise and gentle fragmentation of soft and hard tissues.

·         preservation of healthy tissue through ultrasonic separation of damaged tissue.

·         cleansing of the wound area with less pressure and pain.

Advantages of Ultrasonic

Studies are indicating that the advantages of the application of mechanical debridement utilising ultrasonic waves result in progression from the inflammatory response to a proliferating wound within 4 – 6 treatments. Healthy tissue is not injured by this process and it is shown to be a successful wound bed preparation for skin grafts.

Key Features

Lightweight in design enabling easy transport to a variety of clinical settings such as community sites, clinic or in home and multiple ward units. The design does not require expensive specialty consumables.  Hand pieces are reusable, able to be sterilised and are easy to clean and maintain.

Indications for Use

Treatment is recommended for use on all recalcitrant wounds locked in an extended inflammatory response that are displaying signs of critical colonisation:

·         Venous.

·         Neuropathic.

·         Infected / dehisced surgical wounds.

Treatment Mechanism

The mechanical action of the device safely debrides the wound by mixing low frequency ultrasonic waves and coupling saturation via the hollow titanium tip of the hand piece. This creates cavitation of necrotic tissue and the streaming of an aerosolised solution, which removes debris and slough, without damaging the underlying healthy tissue.
