The Fiber Optic Repeater (FOR) consists of two parts: Donor Unit and Remote Unit. The Donor Unit transforms downlink radio signal to optical signal and transmits to the Remote Unit. Then the Remote Unit transforms the optical signal to radio signal and transmit to coverage areas. Conversely, the Remote Unit transforms the uplink radio signal to optical signal, and transmits to the Donor Unit. Then the Donor Unit transforms the optical signal to radio signal and transmit to base station. It achieves the bidirectional amplification of the base station uplink and downlink signal via combine fiber optic transmission with radio coverage. Thereby availably expand coverage range of base station, provide solution of flexible outdoor coverage, enhance voice quality and improve the coverage effect of mobile communication network. The Simulate Fiber Optic Repeater, which directly amplify the simulate radio signal(without digital disposal).

As per the method of receiving BTS signal by the Donor Unit, two types of FOR are available:
Cable-Access FOR: the receive BTS signal via a direct coupler closed to the BTS (recommended);
Wireless-Access FOR: to receive BTS signal via a Donor Antenna (applicable when no fiber optic cable connecting to the BTS); can be sorted into 2 sub-categories: Band-Selective and Channel-Selective.
According to the system composing the FOR can be also divided into single system, dual system, and multi-system (above three).
